How to cook pressure cooker gammon

Sharing is caring!

Pressure cooker gammon is so quick and simple that it is the perfect mid-week meal. Before we purchased a pressure cooker, we always slow-cooked our gammon in the slow cooker. Although this was delicious, it was time-consuming and sometimes after a busy day you want to serve dinner quickly.

Neither the pressure cooker nor slow cooker method requires much effort on your part, both are very simple to make. The only difference is the time taken to cook, one is about 6-8 hours and the other is 30 minutes. Pressure cooking is something new to us in this house after we only recently brought an electric pressure cooker but trust me, after the first time cooking you ham in the pressure cooker, you will realise it is up there with the best way to cook it.

Now in this household, gammon can be eaten a whole variety of ways, here are just some of our favourite dinner suggestions.

  • Gammon with new potatoes and salad
  • Piccalilli and gammon rolls

As long as the leftover ham is stored in an airtight container in the fridge, it will be good for 3 days. Another bonus to gammon is just how cheap it is, for a few pounds you can have a few meal’s worth of delicious gammon.

One thing I love about making your own ham is the fact that it can either be a delicious side dishes such as in a salad or with chips and then come Christmas time, it becomes its own delicious recipe and can be served with things such as a gorgeous mustard glaze or with dijon mustard on a platter, it is the perfect base for your favourite glaze.

How long do you cook a gammon joint in the pressure cooker?

This is all dependent on the size, however, here are a few suggestions:

750g Gammon joint – This recipe is for a 750g gammon joint and it takes 30 minutes to cook in the pressure cooker, this cooks it to perfection.

1kg Gammon joint – If you have a slightly larger joint, it should be fine for 30 minutes also as there is not much more meat to the joint. Just check before serving that you are happy with this.

2kg Gammon joint – For the larger joint, I would go for 60 minutes in the pressure cooker, this size joint is great for leftovers too, so make sure nothing goes to waste!

What is the best slow cooker gammon vs pressure cooker gammon?

You will find that both ways cook the ham to perfection, it is just about how much or how little time you have. In the coming weeks, I am going to share a slow cooker ham that is cooked in a cooking liquid of diet cola. I know it sounds weird but trust me, it is amazing and perfect for those who want to leave it with a longer cooking time, it slow cooks and a simple glaze with this easy recipe. If you are short on time, this pressure cooker recipe is ready in little time and the cooking process is painless.

If like me you have a little trouble with the pressure cooker, may sure that you have the pressure release valve closed before you start. In the past, I have had this open and then struggled to work out why it was not coming up to pressure. Just make sure you take care when releasing the pressure, it is hot! You may find that your pressure cooker lid has its own natural pressure release function at the end of cooking time, just read your manual.

In the coming weeks, we are planning on using our pressure cooker more to save us some time in the evenings, come back to find out more of these recipes and other delicious recipes for the whole family.

For now though, if you are looking for a family favourite dinner idea, how about our cooking basics roast chicken. Perfect for the whole family and great for leftovers too. We are also working hard to share some delicious-looking recipes on our Pinterest page which you can find here.

    1. My pressure cooker has a quick release valve so I usually use that and take it out in a couple of minutes. Leave it on the side to rest for a few minutes as it will be piping hot and then carve to serve.
